Settlement Systems was founded in 1993 by James G. Marthen, a pioneer in the world of Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR). To date, Settlement Systems handled tens of thousands of Mediations and Arbitrations in the New York Metro area.

In May of 2016, William H. Groner, Esq., a renowned litigator with 35+ years of experience, and a long time client of Settlement Systems, took the reins of CEO, with Jim assuming the role of President. Together, Bill and Jim’s dynamic synergy and vision have resulted in the reimagination of ADR and together will seek to Redefine the Art of Dispute Resolution.

William H. Groner is Chief Executive Officer of SSAM. Prior to joining the company, Bill had over 35 years of experience in personal injury and construction law representing personal injury clients as well as insurance and surety companies. During those years Bill has participated in countless mediations and hundreds of negotiations involving settlements in excess of $1,000,000,000.

Notably, for nearly a decade, Bill co-managed the 9/11 Mass Tort representing over 10,000 first responders, construction workers, volunteers and others who were exposed to various Ground Zero toxins and contaminants during the post 9/11 clean up. Bill was a principal negotiator and architect of the resulting settlement in excess of $800,000,000.

James G. Marthen, has been a pioneer and innovator in the field of alternative dispute resolution for over a quarter of a century.  In 1993, after having worked as a manager and a Vice-President for other alternative dispute resolution (ADR) companies, Jim had a creative vision for the future of ADR and founded Settlement Systems. 

Jim became the driving force behind expanding the Insurance Industry’s and public’s awareness and knowledge of the benefits, efficiencies as well as intricacies and machinations of ADR. As a result, Jim and Settlement Systems, Inc. was the first ADR firm to be chosen to provide mediation solutions for The New York City Housing Authority, New York State Insurance fund as well as the New York State Liquidation Bureau. Under his tutelage, Settlement Systems has brought tens of thousands of mediations or arbitrations to a successful conclusion throughout the tri-state area. 

For the past two decades, Jim has lectured extensively at various New York Metro area law schools, numerous Continuing Legal Education providers, various bar associations, the Defense Research Institute as well as many Trial Lawyer associations.
